Our Mission
“To provide appropriate and predictable surgical treatment for temporomandibular joint pathology and it’s sequelae.”
This short mission statement is packed with content. Dissecting the message is a worthwhile endeavor.

1. The Goal
Appropriate and predictable is the goal of treatment.
Appropriate simply refers to the correct operation for the correct diagnosis. Thus, establishing the correct diagnosis is where everything begins.
Predictable means the procedure is reproducible and creates a similar, anticipated response in most patients. This way both the surgeon and the patient know what to expect.

2. Surgical Treatment
This is a surgical office and Dr. Shah is a surgeon. Thus, the treatment that is offered here is surgical in nature.
NOT ALL PATIENTS REQUIRE SURGERY.
The diagnostic process will answer this question. If surgery is required, it should be appropriate and predictable. One patient may require total joint replacements. Another may require discectomies. Yet another may need arthroscopy and/or arthrocentesis. Orthognathic surgery might be recommended as a second stage operation or an adjunct to TMJ surgery, but in any case the surgery is specific to the patient and therefore, the diagnosis. This is not a one size fits all practice.

3. TMJ Pathology
Temporomandibular joint pathology and its sequelae.
One of the downstream effects of this specific diagnosis is intra-articular pain and dysfunction. This means pain in the TM joints with functional problems related to chewing, speaking and jaw movement. Other sequelae could include dentofacial deformities, malocclusions and airway problems with or without obstructive sleep apnea. The goal is to treat ALL of the pathology and avoid “tunnel vision”.
